 1A Information & Data Literacy

Browsing, Searching and Filtering Data

  What are Digital Skills?

First you need the Technical equipments:

  Hardware
  Software

Then comes Information Processing (Digital) Skills:

Accessing, Organizing, Storing and   Communicating Information.

What do I need for this unit?

A computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone with internet connection.

  Understanding the Internet

What is the Internet?

The word ‘Internet’ comes from the combination of parts of the two words ‘International’ and ‘Network’.

The Internet is used in our daily lives e.g. looking at the news, shopping online, banking, music etc.

  How does it work?

The Internet is a library of millions of computers and computer networks all over the world.
It is connected using communication networks.
The Internet is the actual network on which all other services are run, e.g. the World Wide Web, email etc.
This allows communication and exchange of information between every computer on the network.

  The World Wide Web

What is the World Wide Web (www)?
A library of information on any subject you are interested in.
When you look up information on the www (or Internet) you are ‘surfing the Web’.
The ‘World Wide Web’ is the part of the Internet which is made up of millions of websites and web pages. The ‘World Wide Web’ then uses the Internet to link all of these websites together.
What is a website?
The internet is divided into parts called websites.
Each website has a group of pages (called web pages) containing information on a particular subject.

How do I connect to the Internet?

You will need a device.
You will need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) – you will pay them to connect you to the Internet.
You will then use a browser to navigate the World Wide Web.

  What is a Browser?

A browser allows you to explore the World Wide Web and view websites.
Examples of browsers:

Google Chrome is a free web browser from Google

Firefox is a free web browser from Mozilla

Microsoft Edge is a web browser from Microsoft

  What happens on the Internet?

This is what happens in one minute on the Internet!

  Search Engines

A search engine will allow you to quickly search through millions of web pages.
There are different types of search engines e.g.
Think about what information you would like to search for…
You can search using words or by asking a question e.g.:

What is the capital of Spain?

  Exercise 1

Open the search engine Google:
Type in the topic you wish to search for e.g. Cinema times and press ‘Enter’. This is a very broad search.
You will get far more results than you need so if you add more words to your search you will get better results e.g. ’Cinema times for Dublin’.
You would like to go to the cinema on Tuesday night - Search for the cinema times in your own town on Tuesday.

What kind of information can I find on the Internet?

You can find information on any subject you like on the Internet. For example:

News in your area
Travel information
Cooking
Sports
Business information
Music

  Exercise 2

You are planning a trip to Dublin, Ireland in June. Use your search engine to find out:

What the weather will be like?
What are the main tourist attractions?
What airlines fly from your country to Dublin?

  What is a URL?

Sometimes you won’t need to use a search engine.
Every web page has its own unique address called a Universal Resource Locator (URL).
If you know the URL you can type it in to the address browser:

For example:

type in www.erasmusplus.ie and press return/Enter button.

  Linking to other pages

On www.erasmusplus.ie you will notice as you move the mouse pointer across the page, the         symbol sometimes changes to a        symbol.
When this happens, it means you have found a link to another web page. Just click the mouse!

  Exercise 3 Downloading Google Chrome

To use Google Chrome, you must first download and install it to your computer. The process is simple and should take no more than a few minutes.
Using your current web browser, navigate to www.google.com/chrome
The Google Chrome download page will appear. Locate and select the Download now button.
A dialog box will appear. Review the Google Chrome Terms of Service, then click Accept and Install.
The Google Chrome Installer will open automatically. Step-by-step instructions will appear in the browser window if you are not sure how to proceed.
