Digital Content Creation

What do I need for this unit?

A tablet or smartphone with internet connection.

  Exercise

You learned how to download apps in the last unit.

Go to your app store.
Find ‘Google Maps’ and download it.
Find ‘iTranslate’ and download it.

  Google Maps

  • Tap on the Google Maps app to open.
  • Search for a place in your home country.
  • Swipe up from the bottom of your screen to get the information.
  • Tap on ‘Directions’  and then choose your starting point. This can be your home address. Tip: if you have your location turned on (on your device) then you can choose to start directions from wherever you are.
  • You will see a number of options for you which indicate driving, public transport, walking, taxi and cycling:
  • Tap on the symbol to see
  • how long it will take you to
  • walk or drive.

  Exercise Google Maps

You are in Paris, France on holidays.
You would like to travel to Calais, also in France.
Use Google Maps to find the route options.
Is it quicker to drive or to take public transport?
What are the public transport options?

  Google Maps tip

You can also download the map (‘download offline map) so you can still use it when you are not connected to the Internet  - very useful when travelling and wifi is not available!

  Travelling abroad

You have downloaded iTranslate on your device.
Tap on the app to open it.
You can now use your phone or tablet to translate other languages.

  Using iTranslate

You will see two options on your screen.
Tap on the flag and select your own language.
Tap on the other flag and select the language you wish to translate e.g. if you wish to translate from Hungarian to Irish then     is the first option and      is the second.

  Exercise

You are on holidays in Spain.
Your native language is English.
Using the iTranslate app translate the following from English to Spanish:
Good morning!
Where is the bus station?
Tip: You can also tap on the microphone to translate what you are saying.

  YouTube

YouTube is a video sharing site.
At least one hour of video is uploaded to YouTube every second!
Download the YouTube app from your app store.

  Is YouTube useful?

You don’t need to upload videos to use YouTube.
YouTube can be very useful for finding ‘How to’ videos with step-by-step guides.
For example: D.I.Y, cooking or music.

  Exercise

You are trying to repair a leaking tap in your home.
Open the YouTube app.
Look for the search symbol at the top.
Type in ‘How to fix a leaking tap’ and find the best video that will help you.

You received a present of a piano for your birthday.
Open the YouTube app.
Look for the search symbol at the top.
Type in ‘piano for beginners’.

  YouTube searches

Tip: You may get a lot of results when you search on YouTube. A good way to filter these results is to check the number of views.
If there are thousands/millions of views then this can be a sign that others have found the video useful.
Views.

  What are your interests?

Think about something that you would like to do e.g. Yoga, cooking, online games.
Search in your app store for relevant apps
Check the app reviews to see what other people think.
Check that the app is free before you download! Some apps have a small charge – you can choose to pay if you think the app is worthwhile.
